Using Multiple Computers With 1 License
Question
Can I work from different computers/laptops with just one user license? For example daytime/office evening/home?
Answer
With a license purchase you can install and run the program on any number of computers. The number of licenses you purchase only limit the number of users who can be connected (on a network) to the same database at the same time.
If you want to use Smart Contractor on a computer in your office, and on another computer at home, you can do that with one user license, and there are two ways it can be done:
- If you do not have a network hub (your computers are not networked), you can purchase a "USB drive" (for 10 quid) and backup your data (Utilities > Backup Data) from one computer onto the USB drive, and restore it (Utilities > Restore Backup) onto the other computer. In this situation you can only update data on one computer at a time. If you update data on both computers, the changes made on the office computer will be lost when you restore the backup from the laptop.
- If you have a network hub (your laptop is networked with your office computer), you can connect your laptop to the network, use File > Open Database to open the Smart Contractor database on the other (office) computer, and then select the File > Work Offline menu option. This will put a copy of the office computer's database on your laptop. You can then continue to make changes to data on both computers, and when you want to merge the databases back together, you can connect the laptop to the network and select the File > Merge Offline Database menu option. This will merge the changes you made on the laptop into the database on the office computer, retaining the changes made to both databases. (If you change the same data field in the same data record on both computers, the merge process will display a message indicating this - showing the different entries - and asking which version you want to keep. It keeps a log of any "data collisions" like this so you can go back and see which version of the changes you kept.)
